TORONTO 2014 LATEST: Tsonga sets up QF clash with Murray

France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga reacts after

Jo-Wilfred Tsonga produced a stunning performance today, beating number 1 seed Novak Djokovic 6-2 6-2 in only 63 minutes.

Probably not the start Djokovic wanted before the US Open later this month. Having come through a really tough opening 3 set match against another talented Frenchman, Gael Monfils, he was completely outplayed today. All is not lost for fans of the Serbian however, as Cincinnatti provides another chance to find his feet pre Flushing Meadows.

It’s Tsonga’s first win against Djokovic since the 2010 Australian Open, and Jo is sure to fancy his chances against Murray after such a strong performance- plus the fact that Murray has come through to the Quater Final stage via a walkover, Gasquet withdrawing due to injury.

It’ll be a tricky match to call, what with both men playing so well. Analysis of that match will hopefully be forthcoming soon!

Just a quick update on the latest upsets from the Tournament. When I can I’ll post some more thoughts on all the latest- thanks for reading!

TORONTO 2014 LIVE: Nick Kyrgios vs. Andy Murray

Hello and welcome to my first live match post! Thought I’d start with what looks to be one of the most exciting early matches of the tournament: Kyrgios vs. Murray! I will be updating this post live during the match- so be sure to keep checking back for the latest…

MATCH SUMMARY:

Murray wins: 6-2 6-2.

To be honest I was expecting a little more competition from Kyrgios, but everyday is different- and a combination of nerves and inexperience plus a lot of unforced errors, meant that the Australian was not playing at his highest level. This was added to Murray’s solid and unrelenting play- Andy was on auto-pilot, sweeping past his opponent with ease, and looking extremely promising. I’m certain he has another few levels to his game ready for the finals. I suspect his game plan is one employed by most seeds- serve well, exploit unforced errors, don’t go overboard- all to save your best match play for when you really need it (i.e. when you’re down a set and a break in the semis).

Kyrgios certainly has potential for the future, he is a fiery character and powerful player, but today he was overwhelmed by the Number 8 seed, and British Number 1, Andy Murray.
