Cilic falls to the ground on clinching match point and becoming US Open 2014 Men’s Singles Champion.

Marin Cilic produced a stunning grand slam final performance last night, beating fellow first time finalist Kei Nishikori of Japan 6-3 6-3 6-3. It seems Nishikori could not maintain his own extremely high standards of play, fatigue perhaps a factor after playing 11 hours in his previous 3 matches to reach the final.

The Croat outplayed his rival, hitting 17 aces throughout the match, 80% of his first serves in, and dropping serve just once in only 1 hour and 54 minutes. Continue reading

With the men’s final all set for tomorrow, I take a look at how the 10th and 14th seeds made it through the semi-finals, in a twist that nobody would’ve predicted at the start of this year’s US Open. But that is the beauty of the sport- anything is possible!
